Anticipating my intended return home, I have finally been bestowed with the pleasure of being in posession of my own computer. Now if that isn't a convoluted sentence, then someone please tell me why IE is better than firefox in handling Tamil websites?

Unfortunately, even with Unicode fonts, Gecko (Firefox's renderer) has plenty of unresolved bugs (mostly character combination bugs) in the way it renders Indic characters on Windows (not sure what it's like on Linux etc). Lots of these bugs were waiting for volunteers last time I looked at Bugzilla. Reading Hindi/Bengali content with Firefox is a pain as a result.

Cheers guys. I eventually ended up changing the region settings on XP. Works well enough.
